Effective Stretch Mark Treatment at a Leading Melbourne Clinic

Effective Stretch Mark Treatment at a Leading Melbourne Clinic

Stretch marks (striae) are a type of scar that occurs when rapid tearing of the dermis stretches collagen fibres. Able to affect all skin types, conditions and colours, stretch marks may appear as red or purple lines that fade to a white / silver colour. As stretch marks are a condition of the dermis, the superficial application of moisturiser to the epidermis has little effect in prevention or reduction. However, stretch mark removal is not impossible when the best stretch mark treatment is used. Australian Laser & Skin Clinics provides a range of treatment options at our Melbourne clinics to help you get rid of or minimise the appearance of stretch marks, with available treatments including skin needling and Laser Skin Therapy (LLLT).

The Causes of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur when the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching. Although our skin is fairly resilient, when it’s overstretched, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. As a result, stretch marks can form. A number of causes promote the formation and appearance of stretch marks, with the main causes being:

  • Rapid weight gain or loss / Rapid body growth during puberty
Stretch marks may occur during various phases of life, but usually start in young teens going through puberty. As the body grows and expands, we experience stretch marks as particular parts of the body such as breasts and hips grow and the skin can only stretch so much. When people gain weight, the skin is overstretched and the collagen in the skin is changed. This results in the formation of stretch marks that can be hard to get rid of.
  • Pregnancy
Medically known as striae gravidarum, ninety per cent of pregnant women get stretch marks due to the rapid growth of the baby causing the abdominal area to stretch. This usually occurs in the third trimester, when the abdominal skin is forced to accommodate the growing uterus. Some pregnant women also develop stretch marks on the breasts, hips, buttocks and thighs.

Stretch marks often vary in colour and can be anywhere from a few centimetres to a few inches long. They most commonly appear on:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Upper Arms
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Buttocks

Do Stretch Marks Ever Really Go Away?

Stretch marks very rarely go away on their own accord, and when they do, it’s only when the cause of skin stretching has been eliminated. For most people, however, stretch marks become a lifetime skin concern once they appear on the skin. While over time stretch marks can fade to a less noticeable scar, the majority of stretch marks will remain without treatment. Fortunately, stretch mark treatment can minimise the appearance of stretch marks.

Can Laser Therapy Remove Stretch Marks?

While laser therapy is unable to completely get rid of stretch marks from the deep layers of the dermis, it can lessen the depth of them and make them less noticeable. With laser stretch mark treatment, the colour and texture of stretch marks can be greatly reduced. Laser treatment is considered to be the best and most effective treatment for immature stretch marks that are still red in colour, however the appearance of older stretch marks can also be improved.

Stretch Mark Removal and Treatment

Stretch marks can be effectively be treated at Australian Laser & Skin Clinics with a multi-treatment programme that’s designed to help with stretch mark removal. All treatments are performed by paramedically trained skin clinicians or registered nurses.

Stretch mark treatment options available at our Melbourne clinics include:

Skin Needling

Skin needling has been performed for many years, and can be used safely for stretch mark removal. Skin needling is based on acupuncture and uses a specialised device that differs in size to accommodate the areas and concern being treated. This stretch mark treatment encourages the production and distribution of new collagen that will progressively remodel the stretch mark, greatly reducing its appearance.

Laser Skin Therapy (LLLT)

LLLT promotes rapid skin repair and renewal without heat or discomfort, making it an ideal procedure to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Emitting a gentle beam to affected areas, LLLT works within the skin to naturally stimulate a healing response. It’s the best treatment for promoting cellular renewal and collagen, allowing uneven texture and raised tissues to repair which aids in stretch mark removal.
