With Spring kicking off the social season, it is the perfect time to make glowing skin a focus. Whether it is laser hair removal, Photo Rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction injections or chemical peels, there are 5 cardinal rules to abide by, to ensure the best treatment with the longest lasting results,
1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen
Unless you have been wearing a minimum SPF 15 every day on any area to be treated for hair removal, then the procedure cannot be performed. As the laser does not differentiate between the pigment in hair or tanned skin, the risk of unwanted burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation significantly increases. Considering not telling your clinician about any recent sun exposure? Melanin checkers will reveal any changes in skin pigment. Sunscreen must also be worn every day for a minimum of 4 weeks for photo-rejuvenation and laser facial treatments.
2. Shave, shave, shave
As crazy as it sounds, any area to be treated with laser hair removal should be shaved within 24hrs prior to treatment. This includes both face and body areas. Shaving levels the hair to the skin surface so that laser can be absorbed all the way down to the hair follicle. This ensures that the light energy is released exactly where the hair root connects with blood supply. Not shaving the area to be lasered can either result in the hair being treated only superficially (meaning ineffective results) or your clinician having to dry shave the area prior to treatment – ouch!
3. Wait, wait, wait
With such hectic work days, it makes sense to book wrinkle reduction injections after work. 6-8pm is the busiest appointment time for this type of procedure. Spring also is the most popular season to start this type of procedure. After the treatment has been performed, it is important not touch or massage the area for at least 4 hours. This also means going to sleep where pressure from a pillow can affect the treatment area. Thinking of going to sleep anyway? The injection actives may not be absorbed evenly creating an imbalanced result. Always give it 4 hours after your appointment before hitting the hay.
4. Preparation is everything
There is nothing like clear and glowing skin to welcome the party season. Chemical peels renew, refresh and revitalise with an active blend of alpha and beta hydroxys. In order for the peel to be most effective, the skin must be prepared with homecare products for at least two weeks. This preparation allows the skin to build up a relationship with the active ingredients so that the peel can be most effective. Failure to prep can significantly increase downtime, flaking, redness and even contribute to pigmentation. A daily skin regimen should include some vitamin A, alpha hydroxys and pigment balancers to strengthen, repair and prepare the complexion for potent peel results.
5. Planning is paramount
Spring and summer are the busiest times of year for skin and facial treatments. Creating a skin plan ensures that you can always have your preferred treatment at your preferred appointment time. Always leave 7-14 days either side of wrinkle reduction or dermal filler treatments before undergoing skin needling, chemical peels or microdermabrasion. This ensures the best results and minimises unwanted skin redness or discomfort. Microdermabrasion is best performed at weekly intervals, peels every 2-4 weeks, laser facials every 4 weeks and needling every 4-8 weeks.
